History

Amethyst Crystals have been continuously used throughout history, dating back to Ancient Greeks and Romans, Egyptian royalty, Chinese Philosophy and early civilisations of Mexico and South America. It was once regarded as a highly precious stone, and was worth as much as a diamond!

This crystals name comes from the Greek word ‘amethustos’, meaning non-drunk. The ancient Greeks made cups from the purple stone as they believed that drinking from it could prevent you from becoming inebriated.

Appearance

Amethyst is a member of the quartz family. Coloured purple by iron atoms within the crystal lattice. This stone takes many different formations including geodes, clusters, tumbled stone and rock.

The best way to judge the quality of an Amethyst is to look at how deep the hue of purple is. Although its purple hue varies in intensity, the colour is only an indication of the level of heat that the particular stone endured while in the ground. This crystal does not need to be purple to heal, and you will find slightly different healing outcomes for different coloured stones.
