Chrysoprase
Global Mining Sites
Chrysoprase can be found all around the world and in countries such as Madagascar, Tanzania, India, Russia, Brazil, USA, Poland, and Australia. The highest quality stones on the market are coming out of mines in Queensland, Australia (hence the “Australian Jade” nickname).
History
This crystal was first found in 1844 by J.D. Dana. The meaning of Chrysoprase comes from two words, ‘chrys’ being the Greek for ‘gold or yellow’ and ‘prase’ from the Greek for ‘leek’, referring to the green colouring of it.
In ancient times, Chrysoprase was often referred to as “the Stone of Venus”. It was commonly worn as jewellery or used as a carving and sculpting material due to its raw beauty. A common tale is that this stone was even Alexander the Great’s favourite gemstone.
Appearance
Chrysoprase, also known as Australian Jade, is a green variety of Chalcedony that contains minor traces of Nickel. It’s structure is cryptocrystalline, which basically means this stone is made up of a large amount of tiny crystals too small for the human eye to even see!
Chrysoprase may be quite different to each other, and may be bright green through to a pale yellowish green. These days, the apple green crystals are the most common variety and the lighter Citron are getting easier to obtain.
