Global Mining Sites
Fluorite is a very commonly occurring mineral with a majority of veins and deposits in South Africa and China. This mineral is also found in a large number of locations in the world such as Canada, United Kingdom, Russia and Spain.
History
The meaning of the name of this stone comes from the Latin word “fluere” which means “to flow” as it was originally used hundreds of years ago in flux production, with its flowing action of great value to workers.
It’s earliest uses date back to ancient Egyptians and Chinese and was used commonly as an ornamental stone.
Appearance
Fluorite is a member of the Halide family and often occurs with other common crystals, such as quartz and calcite. The mineral make-up of this stone is calcium fluoride. It commonly has an isometric cubic structure and can also be found in an octagonal or isometric form as well.
Although pure Fluorite is transparent, it is common for it to be found in various colours, which depends on the inclusion of various minerals within the stone. It is sometimes available in yellow, blue and brown shades but typically in ‘rainbow’, gentle purple and green in colour. This stone spans the most extensive colour range in the mineral world.
